Bluetooth BQB vs CE RED: Two Certifications, One Product
Almost every Bluetooth product needs two certifications that serve completely different purposes: BQB to use the Bluetooth trademark, and CE RED to be sold in the EU. Confusing them is one of the most common causes of delayed launches.
Different Purposes
| Bluetooth BQB | CE RED | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Use the Bluetooth trademark; list with the SIG | Comply with EU radio, EMC, safety and cybersecurity law |
| Owner | Bluetooth SIG | EU legislation (self-declaration / Notified Body) |
| Scope | Bluetooth protocol conformance and profile testing | RF, EMC, safety, cybersecurity for all radio functions |
| Output | QDID / Declaration ID | DoC + CE mark |
Order of Operations
BQB and RED can run in parallel because they test different aspects. The practical sequence we recommend: qualify the Bluetooth controller (or use a pre-qualified module), then run RED testing on the end product, and complete BQB end-product listing with the final product information.
How to Save Time
- Use a pre-qualified module where possible — it inherits controller qualification and only needs end-product listing.
- Lock firmware early — both certifications are configuration-specific; late firmware changes trigger retests.
- Combine the campaigns — our lab runs BQB qualification, end-product listing and RED testing in one coordinated programme.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I sell in the EU with only BQB?
No. BQB is a trademark license, not regulatory compliance. CE RED is legally required to place radio equipment on the EU market.
Can I use the Bluetooth logo with only CE RED?
No. Trademark use requires BQB completion and a valid QDID or Declaration ID.
Does a pre-qualified module mean I can skip BQB?
No — the end product still needs listing, but the heavy controller-level testing is inherited, which cuts weeks from the programme.
