Bottom line: standards are revised on a cycle (EN 60950-1 was replaced by EN 62368-1; radio standards gain new editions), certificates expire, and marketplaces re-verify documentation. Start transition work at least 3 months before the deadline so re-testing never collides with your sales calendar.
When a Transition Is Triggered
- The standard referenced in your certificate is superseded and the old edition is withdrawn (DoW date passed)
- Your certificate reaches expiry (typically 3–5 years for scheme certificates)
- A marketplace or importer requests documentation against the current standard edition
- Your product changes — hardware revision, firmware or critical components — outside the reported scope
The Transition Process
- Impact assessment — our engineers map the delta between the old and new standard editions against your existing report.
- Gap testing — only changed clauses are re-tested; full re-testing is rarely required.
- Certificate re-issuance — the certification body issues the updated certificate referencing the new edition.
- Documentation refresh — DoC, report summary and label/marking updated; channel documents re-uploaded.
What to Prepare
| Item | Notes |
|---|---|
| Existing certificate and test report | The baseline for the impact assessment |
| Product samples | Same hardware revision as the certified product |
| Change list | Hardware, firmware and critical-component changes since certification |
| Target market list | Determines which national marks must be transferred or re-issued |
Next Steps
Send us your certificate and we will return a transition plan with the affected clauses and timeline. Request a transition assessment.
Transition requirements follow the current edition of the applicable standard and the rules of the issuing scheme; this guide is general reference only.
