Technical Q&A

The quantity is driven by the test scope, not by the product category. A single EMC plus safety series for a consumer device is normally built around two to three production-representative units, while battery testing can consume several dozen cells because T.1-T.8 includes destructive tests.
What matters more than the count is the condition. Samples must match the final production build, carry the final firmware, and be shipped with the accessories and packaging that will actually be sold. Any deviation has to be declared, because the report is valid only for the configuration that was tested.
The exact quantity is fixed in the test plan and quotation before you ship, so you are not guessing.
Yes, and it is usually the cheaper route. Bring the lab in at EVT, when the enclosure, the grounding scheme and the antenna layout can still change. A pre-compliance sweep at that stage tells you whether the design will survive formal testing while fixes are still a board revision rather than a tooling change.
By DVT the design should be close enough to run the formal series. By MP, testing can only confirm what has already been built, and a failure at that point means tooling and inventory.
If the schedule leaves no room for a pre-test, at least send the critical configuration for a single EMC scan.
A failed item is not a failed project. The report records the measured value against the limit, and our engineers review the setup with you to separate a design issue from a test-configuration issue - a cable routed differently or an accessory left attached can produce a failure that has nothing to do with the product.
Retesting is normally limited to the failed items rather than the full series, and it is quoted separately because the scope differs each time. The product has to come back as a new sample that reflects the fix; a unit modified on the bench cannot be passed without being verified again.
Most fixes sit in grounding, filtering, cable routing or firmware power settings.
Pre-compliance is our own engineering scan. The methods are the same but the result is not a formal, traceable conclusion - its purpose is to find problems while they are still cheap to fix. Formal certification testing is performed to the full standard, with calibrated equipment and documented uncertainty, and produces a report that a Notified Body, a marketplace or a customs officer will accept.
Running the first before the second is what keeps a project on schedule. A pre-scan typically adds a few days and removes the most common cause of a four-week delay.
No, and buyers frequently ask for the wrong one. A test report is issued by the laboratory: it states what was tested, how, and the measured results against the limit. A certificate is issued by a certification body or an authority and carries a registration number that can be verified independently.
For most CE directives there is no such document as a 'CE certificate'. Conformity is demonstrated by the technical file, the test reports inside it, and a Declaration of Conformity signed by the manufacturer. A certificate is genuinely mandatory for access schemes such as TELEC, KC, BIS or CCC, where the authority issues the approval itself.
The technical file is legally the manufacturer's responsibility, but we routinely compile the test-related sections on the client's behalf. A file that survives scrutiny contains: product description and intended use, rated specifications, an illustrated build description, block diagram and schematics, bill of materials, certificates for safety-critical components, the risk assessment, the test reports, the user manual in the language of the target market, and the signed Declaration of Conformity.
It has to be kept for ten years after the last unit is placed on the market and be handed over on request. The usual failure is not a missing file but a missing risk assessment or manual translation.
Formal testing is not a best-case demonstration. The worst-case configuration is the build and operating mode that produces the highest emission or the lowest immunity margin, and identifying it is engineering work rather than a formality.
In practice it usually lands on the variant with the fastest clock, the highest output power, the longest cable, the densest packing, or the firmware mode that stresses the radio hardest. When a family covers several models, we normally test the worst case and document the engineering rationale that ties the other models to it - that rationale is what makes a family approval defensible in front of an authority.
A quotation should let you see the boundary of the work. Ours is built from four lines: engineering and test time per standard, report preparation, the certification body fee where a certificate is required, and any witnessed testing or travel.
What is charged separately is almost always reactive: retests after a failure, additional samples, extra configurations, translation of manuals, and Notified Body review or annual surveillance fees - those are set by the body, not by us. Ask for those lines explicitly before you approve a purchase order. A quotation that looks cheapest very often excludes exactly them.
