Bottom line: start your compliance assessment 4–6 weeks before your target launch date. For most electronics the critical path runs through scoping, pre-testing, formal testing and certificate issuance — and the documents your sales channel asks for (DoC, test report, certificate) only become available at the end of that chain.
The Launch Compliance Sequence
- Define target markets and channels — EU retail, US retail and e-commerce platforms each demand different evidence. Marketplaces such as Amazon require category compliance documentation at listing time.
- Identify applicable directives and standards — e.g. CE RED + EMC + safety + RoHS for EU radio products; FCC Part 15 plus a safety evaluation for the US.
- Book pre-testing — a pre-scan catches EMC and RF failures while design changes are still cheap.
- Formal testing and report issuance — full execution against the identified standard set; the report is issued by the accredited laboratory.
- Certification / Declaration of Conformity — the certificate is issued, or the DoC is signed by the manufacturer.
- Assemble the channel document pack — DoC, test report, certificate, authorized-representative letter (EU) and user manuals in the required languages.
Frequent Launch Blockers
| Blocker | Why it stalls launches | How to avoid it |
|---|---|---|
| Battery-powered products | UN 38.3 transport testing and SDS are separate from CE/FCC and are often forgotten | Add battery transport testing to the initial scope, not after certification |
| Late software freezes | Radio and protocol tests are version-sensitive; late firmware can invalidate results | Freeze RF-relevant firmware before formal testing |
| Platform documentation requests | Marketplaces request certificates in specific formats and languages | Confirm the platform's document requirements during scoping |
| EU representative | Non-EU manufacturers need an authorized representative named on the DoC | Appoint your EU representative before DoC signature |
Next Steps
Run your product through the Compliance Checker for a first-pass scope, or request a launch-readiness quote — our engineers will map the required tests, standards and timeline for your product and target markets.
This checklist is general guidance. Applicable requirements for your product are confirmed during project scoping; formal compliance determinations follow the standard text and the opinions of the relevant certification body.
