Battery / Energy storage United States
Battery / Energy storage → United States
To place Battery / Energy storage on the United States market, the mandatory steps are UL 1642 (cell), UL 2054 / UL 62368-1 (pack), UN 38.3 (transport, air). Typical lead time: 5–7 weeks.
Mandatory
- UL 1642 (cell)
- UL 2054 / UL 62368-1 (pack)
- UN 38.3 (transport, air)
Recommended
- FCC (if radio fitted)
Key documents
- Test report
- NRTL certification
- UN38.3 report
How this pathway works in practice
In the United States a lithium pack is regulated as a hazardous material in transport and as an end product by safety certification, and the two tracks run on different clocks. UL 1642 covers the cell, UL 2054 or UL 62368-1 covers the pack and the product it powers, and UN 38.3 governs air transport under the IATA dangerous-goods rules. Certification to UL standards is not issued by a federal regulator, yet NRTL marks from UL, ETL or TÜV are demanded by retailers, marketplaces and insurers before a listing goes live, so in practice it is a market-access requirement rather than a voluntary one.
Practical points that decide whether a launch date holds:
- A pack assembled from a certified cell does not inherit that certification. The pack is a new construction and needs its own evaluation.
- UN 38.3 evidence must describe the pack as shipped, including the protection circuit and the firmware that limits charge current.
- If the pack also carries a radio, Part 15 authorisation runs in parallel with the safety file, not after it.
We run the safety evaluation and the transport tests on the same sample set, so the two reports cannot drift apart on ratings and markings.
Each mandatory item above is mapped to a test standard inside our accredited scope, then tested on the smallest sample that still covers every variant you intend to ship, so the importer of record can hand the file straight to the United States assessment route without a second round of questions. The 5–7 weeks lead time counts from the day production-representative samples arrive, not from the day the quotation is signed, and the 3 key documents listed above are the ones most often requested at the border or at listing review.
