What this standard covers and how we test it
EN 16062 defines the high-level application protocol of the pan-European eCall: how the in-vehicle system sets up the emergency call, transmits the minimum set of data and keeps the voice channel open afterwards. It is one of the technical specifications listed in Delegated Regulation (EU) 2017/79, so an eCall unit has to meet it to be type-approved together with the vehicle.
The protocol tests cover:
- MSD content and encoding, in-band modem transmission and retransmission
- Registration and call set-up time, including behaviour without network coverage
- What happens when the MSD transfer fails, and the callback window after the crash
- PSAP confirmation handling, and immunity to interruption of the audio channel
Testing needs a network simulator with an eCall test suite and a live GNSS feed: the MSD carries position and time, so a fixed coordinate spoof is rejected during the assessment.
We normally test EN 16062 together with EU 2017/79: one sample set, one set of test dates, and a single report pack that the declaration of conformity can reference.
