Wireless IoT → European Union

To place Wireless IoT on the European Union market, the mandatory steps are CE RED (EN 300 328 / 301 893), EN 301 489-1 EMC, EN 62368-1 Safety, 2011/65/EU RoHS. Typical lead time: 4–6 weeks.

How this pathway works in practice

For a connected device, the Radio Equipment Directive is the umbrella and the harmonised standards underneath it do most of the work: EN 300 328 for wideband 2.4 GHz, EN 301 893 for 5 GHz, EN 301 489-1 and its product-specific parts for EMC, and EN 62368-1 for safety. RoHS sits alongside. Since 1 August 2025 the delegated cybersecurity regulation has made EN 18031 assessment part of the same conformity route for internet-connected radio equipment, which means the security evidence is now expected in the technical file rather than treated as a later nice-to-have.

What actually determines the timeline:

  • Whether every radio variant is described up front. A module change or an extra antenna later means a new assessment, not an amendment.
  • Whether the antenna gain and the power settings are fixed in firmware. Test labs measure worst case, and the file must match what ships.
  • Whether the cyber assessment and the radio assessment share test samples and firmware revisions, because they are often scheduled in parallel.

We plan the radio, EMC, safety and cyber evidence as one package, with a single product description that all four reports reference.

Each mandatory item above is mapped to a test standard inside our accredited scope, then tested on the smallest sample that still covers every variant you intend to ship, so the importer of record can hand the file straight to the European Union assessment route without a second round of questions. The 4–6 weeks lead time counts from the day production-representative samples arrive, not from the day the quotation is signed, and the 3 key documents listed above are the ones most often requested at the border or at listing review.

Accredited scope

  • CNAS Wireless RF testing — RF parameters, spectrum, bandwidth and power for 2.4GHz ISM band transceivers
  • CMA Hazardous substance — RoHS 10 substances XRF screening and chemical confirmation

Frequently asked questions

What certification does a wireless product need for the EU?

For wireless & RF products entering the EU, Blue Asia Labs — a CNAS/CMA-accredited testing laboratory with ILAC-MRA mutual recognition — delivers end-to-end compliance: CE marking under the applicable EU directives (LVD 2014/35/EU for safety, EMC 2014/30/EU for electromagnetic compatibility, RED 2014/53/EU for wireless/RF), plus RoHS and REACH; battery products additionally fall under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542. We issue internationally recognized test reports, help prepare the technical file, and map a clear market-access path. Typical lead time is 2–4 weeks depending on scope.
